1 July 2023 – In difficult times: Call to God

Matthew 14:28-31a(NLT) Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him.

In the storm, Peter called to Jesus, asking to tell him to walk on water. This is not just an ordinary call but a call-out of faith. Not only did he call to Jesus but, he prayed a prayer for faith, ‘tell me to come to you, walking on the water.’ From a call for survival to the prayer of faith, trusting God for the impossible. Remember at this point, there was a storm, they were afraid, the wind was blowing, waves were threatening them, and it was dark. They were fearing for their lives. Amidst these circumstances, Peter changes his focus from the storm to Jesus. Suddenly, Jesus became more prominent than the circumstances; the wind, waves and darkness were no longer issues. His faith is strengthened, he is no more a victim of the storm, but he walks on the storm. The storm is under his feet. Peter called on Jesus, believed in Jesus’s ability and acted in faith. He gets out of the boat and walks on water.

James 1:2-8(MSG) Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.

Mark 11:22-25(ESV) And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

Matthew 21:22(ESV) And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

I conclude that “When you have faith in God, you don’t have to worry about the future. You just know it’s all in His hands. You just go to and do your best.” – Elder Bryan Mathison
