“I am”

In the book of John, there are seven times where Jesus says, “I am….” Each statement gives us a glimpse into His character and what He’s like. When someone says, “I am…,” it reveals something about their identity. About the core of their being. About what is most important to them and about them.

Matthew 16:13b (NIV)“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

John 8:58 “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

Jesus knew exactly who he was.

“I Am the Bread of Life” John 6:35 (NIV) “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:51 (NIV) “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

This bread satisfies the inner longings and hungers of the human heart.

“I Am the Light of the World” John 8:12 (NLT) “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

What the sun is to the earth, Jesus Christ is to the human heart.

“I Am the Door” – John 10:7-9 (NLT) “so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
God has only one door to His Kingdom, and that door is Jesus Christ.

“I Am the True Vine” John 15:5-6 (NIV) “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.”

“I am the good shepherd” John 10:11 (NIV) “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

“I Am the Resurrection and the Life” John 11:25 (NIV) “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;”

“I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” John 14:6 (NIV) “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
