1 Samuel 23:10-11(AMP) Then David said, “O LORD, the God of Israel, Your servant has heard for certain that Saul intends to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. Will the men of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down just as Your servant has heard? O LORD, God of Israel, I pray, tell Your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.”
Once more, David cast all his care on God. David addressed God twice by the title, LORD God of Israel, which was God’s covenant title. It is a blessing to recognise our covenant relationship with God; it is always an effectual plea to make before the throne of grace.
This is the third time David inquired from the Lord. In the Psalm below, we read that David addresses God in the same way.
Psalm 72:18(AMP) Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, Who alone does wonderful things.
Jewish tradition requires them to personally bless the Lord no less than 100 times a day. One of the Hebrew blessings is: Blessed are You, Lord our God. In the verse above, we can see that this phase derives from the scripture itself: Blessing God for his marvellous deeds is always right, always the appropriate response to Who he is, for He alone does wonderful things.
When we inquire from God, it is always good to acknowledge God for who He is and remind Him of His promises and his covenant with us.
Isaiah 62:6-7(ESV) On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.
What a challenge for us! It says we who put the Lord in remembrance, must take no rest… We can hold onto the promises of God and even declare those back to Him.
1 Chronicles 17:23-27(NLT) “And now, O LORD, I am your servant; do as you have promised concerning me and my family. May it be a promise that will last forever. And may your name be established and honored forever so that everyone will say, ‘The LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And may the house of your servant David continue before you forever. “O my God, I have been bold enough to pray to you because you have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him—a dynasty of kings! For you are God, O LORD. And you have promised these good things to your servant. And now, it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it will continue forever before you. For when you grant a blessing, O LORD, it is an eternal blessing!”
God is moved when we remind Him of His promises to us in His own word! God watches over His word to perform it. When inquiring from God, is it always good to remind God of His promises. It builds faith and helps us to be more focused on hearing God.
I leave you with this quote: “The future is as bright as the promises of God.” – William Carey
