11 February 2024 – God is the Potter

Isaiah 64:8(KJV) But now, O Lord, thou art our father; We are the clay, and thou our potter; And we all are the work of thy hand.

The Bible says that God is the Potter, and we are the clay. God wants to mould, transform, and sanctify us, so we should allow Him to do just that. God will never force anything on us. God will only mould us, should we allow it. God cannot even begin to mould and transform us in this life unless we are first willing to do our part.

When the clay is placed on the centre of the platform, the spinning force and the hands of the potter create the perfectly shaped vessel. If the ball of clay is off-centre, however, it will eventually take uneven shape and collapse. Like the clay, we too need to be centred on God. He can shape us perfectly when we give him full control and stay centred on him.

Jeremiah 1:5a,(KJV) Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.

Genesis 2:7(NKJV) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

The Hebrew word that was translated to formed in this verse is the same word used for potter or the one who forms. God shaped the form of a man from the dust of the earth. He formed us into the vessel he imagined and created. His work as a potter began at creation and continues today!

Isaiah 45:9(NLT) Sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Or dispute with the one who shapes it, saying ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’

Adam, however, lost his sonship when he rebelled against the one that formed him. Throughout the generations there were Adam’s descendants who have chosen to uphold God’s sovereignty. By humbly submitting to their Creator, they have demonstrated that they wanted him to be their Father and Potter. Submitted to God and His will for our lives, we allow God to form and shape us.

God moulds us by means of His word and his Holy Spirit. God’s word can mould us as we read it purposefully, meditate on it and apply it.

Psalm 63:6(NLT) I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night.

Psalm 16:7(NLT) I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.

Psalm 32:8(NLT) The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.’

Jeremiah 18:3-6(NLT) So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over. Then the Lord gave me this message: “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.”
