12 January 2023 – Drawing closer to God through Prayer

Isaiah 55:6 (NLT) Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near.
In our daily life, only by drawing closer to God and having real interaction with God can we maintain a relationship with God. Why do we draw closer to God daily?

Pray everyday

Do I have to pray every day? If we ask in duty to earn God’s blessings, the answer is: No. As Christians we remove the words earn, merit, and deserve from our vocabulary when speaking of our acceptance in Christ. If we ask in desperation, wanting to experience God’s presence to strengthen our faith, empower us to obey, and deepen our joy in him, the answer is: Yes.

God wants us to call on Him daily. God wants us to call on Him so that He can answer our prayers. He also wants to share with us incredible blessings that we might otherwise have missed had we not reached out to Him through prayer.

James 5:16b (NLT) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV) Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Daily Prayer allows us to purify ourselves before God.

1 John 3:3 (NKJV) And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
James 4:8 (NKJV) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Joshua told God’s people, Joshua 3:5 (NLT) Then Joshua told the people, “Purify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do great wonders among you.”

The King James says, Sanctify yourselves, and the American Standard says, Consecrate yourselves. The original Hebrew word here is purify, sanctify, and consecrate and means ‘to dedicate, set apart as holy, to prepare.’ It means to devote oneself wholeheartedly to God.

Daily prayer allows us to give our gratitude to God.

We must give thanks to the Lord for all the things that He provides and all the things He does on our behalf. His goodness and lovingkindness to us should be recognised daily.

1 Chronicles 16:34 (ESV) Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalm 9:1 (ESV) I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

Daily prayer is an act of worship and obedience.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (ESV) Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

It is God’s will for His children to rejoice in Him, to pray and give thanks to Him. Prayer also is an act of worship because by praying to Him, we are showing Him how much we adore Him.

Daily prayer acknowledges that God is in control.

If you feel on edge, worried, or anxious, you are not alone! Uncertainty quickly leads to fear, and fear erodes at our faith. Fear can be powerful. Fear is Satan’s most used tactic to get us to doubt God. We have the power to overcome anxiety and fear with God’s promises. Despite what we feel, we must remind ourselves that God is in control.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT) Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Finally, prayer is something that we all should want to do daily. Daily prayer with God is daily fellowship with our heavenly Father.
