Rise up and help us
The Psalm begins with the sons of Korah recalling how God delivered their forefathers in the distant past. The author highlights that this victory came from the Lord’s intervention, not from the people’s military strength. He acknowledges not just God’s ancient deeds but also His recent acts of saving them from enemies.
Verse 9 of Psalm 44 introduces a dramatic shift in theme, Psalm 44:9(NKJV) But You have cast us off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies.
This verse reflects the people’s longing to understand why the Lord no longer grants them victory in battles.
Psalm 44:11-16(NLT) describes their suffering and defeat by enemies: You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale. You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn. We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces. All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies.
In Psalm 44:22(NLT) their plight intensifies: But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.
This verse is echoed in the New Testament – Romans 8:35-37(NIV) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
This reflects Paul’s life, marked by hardships, yet sustained by an unwavering faith in Christ’s love.
Paul faced significant adversity, including persecution, famine, and danger, ultimately dying under Emperor Nero’s reign. Despite this, he confidently asked: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”
Psalm 44 concludes with a powerful plea in Psalm 44:26(NIV) Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
Similarly, Romans 8:28(NIV) assures us: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Despite the trials and suffering we might face while serving God, we can emerge as more than conquerors. Holding steadfast in faith, we find victory and overcome challenges by entrusting our lives to God.
