14 February 2023 – The Lord will strengthen you on your sickbed

Psalm 41:3 (NLT) The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.

Psalms 41:1-3 (MSG) Dignify those who are down on their luck; you’ll feel good—that’s what GOD does. GOD looks after us all, makes us robust with life— Lucky to be in the land, we’re free from enemy worries. Whenever we’re sick and in bed, GOD becomes our nurse, nurses us back to health.

Most commentators believe that David’s misery and low state in this psalm were due to sickness.

Psalms 41:8 (NKJV) “An evil disease,” they say, “clings to him. And now that he lies down, he will rise up no more.”

David trusted that God would heal him. Healing is already an accomplished work.

1 Peter 2:24 (NLT) He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds, you are healed.

Isaiah 49:15 (MSG) “Can a mother forget the infant at her breast, walk away from the baby she bore? But even if mothers forget, I’d never forget you—never.”

According to the verse, God will not forget you. Whatever your circumstances, He is the One who has compassion on you, sympathizes with you and reaches out His hand to touch you. The loving touch of Jesus Christ is so powerful that it can heal all illnesses in your body.

Isaiah 53:4-5 (AMPC) Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy]. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.

In the Old Testament, God asked those bitten by serpents to look at a brass serpent on a pole. Everyone who did, was healed. The brass serpent is a type of Calvary where Jesus was lifted up on the cross. Since everyone who looked at the brazen serpent was healed, everyone who looks to Jesus can be healed today.

John 3:14-15 (AMPC) And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert [on a pole], so must [so it is necessary that] the Son of Man be lifted up [on the cross], In order that everyone who believes in Him [who cleaves to Him, trusts Him, and relies on Him] may not perish, but have eternal life and [actually] live forever!

I conclude with a passage from the book Christ the Healer, by FF Bosworth: “Before people can have a steadfast faith for the healing of their body, they must be rid of all uncertainty concerning God’s will in the matter. Appropriating faith cannot go beyond one’s knowledge of the revealed will of God. Before attempting to exercise faith for healing, one needs to know what the Scriptures plainly teach, that it is just as much God’s will to heal the body as it is to heal the soul.”
