14 January 2023 – Draw closer to God through allowing God to speak to you

Psalm 91:15 (NASB) “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.”

Romans 10:17 (NASB) So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Job 33:14 (CSB) For God speaks time and again, but a person may not notice it.

Hear God’s voice

The first step in hearing God’s voice is waiting upon the Lord to hear His voice. Have you stopped talking so you can hear God’s voice? In most instances, in prayer, we have a one-directional communication with God. We don’t allow God to speak to us. We don’t stop talking to listen and hear God’s voice.

Psalm 62: 5 (ESV) For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

Communication is a two-way street. How can you hear God’s voice? You make your request, then sit in silence and listen. If He doesn’t answer immediately, He will answer because He loves you, so He hears you.

Psalm 66:19-20 (NIRV) But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me!

God tells us in the Bible that the more we seek Him, the more we will experience His presence in our lives.

To set aside the distractions of everyday life and focus on God is not just a physical or mental activity. It’s a way of focusing our hearts on God and communicating that He has our complete attention. You cannot expect to hear God’s voice if you do not regularly focus your attention on Him as completely as you can.

John 16:12-15 (MSG) “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.’

The presence of the Holy Spirit in your life changes everything about hearing God’s voice. If you have a personal relationship with Jesus, His Spirit now lives within you. Rather than wondering where God is and how to connect with Him, we can have complete confidence that He lives within us and is always ready to guide us.

God speaks to you through the Bible. God also speaks through the internal promptings of the Holy Spirit.

John 14:26 (NLT) “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

I conclude with this advice: Quiet yourself and let God speak to you today.
