14 June 2023 – Seven elements of Christian unity

Ephesians 4:4-6 (AMP) There is one body [of believers] and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when called [to salvation]— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all who is [sovereign] over all and [working] through all and [living] in all.

  • One Body, Paul defines the church as Christ’s body, through the one literal body of Christ on the cross, God reconciled himself to us.

Galatians 3:28 (ESV) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  • One Spirit, there is only one Holy Spirit of God, who indeed is God, the third person of the Trinity. It is that Spirit which Christ has sent to His people to make them His, to bind us to Him and to bind us to one another. If the Spirit is in you, then you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons.

Romans 8:15 (ESV) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

  • One Hope, Jesus is our only hope. “For the believer there is hope beyond the grave, because Jesus Christ has opened the door to heaven for us by His death and resurrection.” -Billy Graham

Titus 2:13 (ESV) waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

It is the hope laid up for us in heaven. It is the hope of the gospel, the hope that is in Christ Jesus, the hope that is in God. It is the hope of glory, the hope of eternal life, a living hope to which we were born again, the hope in which we were saved.

  • One Lord, there is one body, one Spirit, and one hope to which we are called. We have one Lord, who is Jesus Christ. Jesus is not only our only hope, but the only way.

Acts 4:12 (ESV) And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

John 14:6 (ESV) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through me.

  • One Faith, there is one faith and it seems evident that by faith is meant the contents of ‘the faith,’ i.e. the gospel.

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (ESV) For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

Ephesians 2:8 (ESV) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

  • One Baptism, Romans 6:3-5 (AMP) Or are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways]. For if we have become one with Him [permanently united] in the likeness of His death, we will also certainly be [one with Him and share fully] in the likeness of His resurrection.

1 Corinthians 12:13 (AMP) For by one [Holy] Spirit we were all baptized into one body, [spiritually transformed—united together] whether Jews or Greeks (Gentiles), slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one [Holy] Spirit [since the same Holy Spirit fills each life].

  • One God and Father, finally, at the end, is one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:6 (AMP) One God and Father of us all who is [sovereign] over all and [working] through all and [living] in all.

Everything truly begins and ends with God the Father himself—all else in the whole of creation, with literally no exception, waits on the Father.
