Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the Alpha and Omega – Revelation 1:8 (ESV) “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Jesus as the beginning and end of all things is a reference to no one but the true God.
Revelation 22:13 (ESV) I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
In essence, Jesus being the Alpha and Omega means that He was at the beginning of all things and will be at the close. It is equivalent to saying He always existed and always will exist.
Christ, as the Alpha and Omega, is the first and last in so many ways. He is the author and finisher of our faith.
Hebrews 12:2 (ESV) looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Alpha means that God was from the very beginning; before Him, there was nothing. There was no before Him. He is the beginning. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God. There never was a time when He was not.
Psalm 90:2 (ESV) Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Acts 17:28 (ESV) for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring’.
What does it mean that God is Omega, or the end? Revelation 21:5-8 (NLT) And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
This text makes it clear that God is the Omega, or the end, in two different ways. For the thirsty He is the end because He will be the source of their life forever. He will be their God. God is a fountain of life at the beginning, and He is a fountain of life at the end—forever.
