Genesis 12:1 (NKJV) “Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Notice there are seven distinct promises/blessings:
- I will make you a great nation
- I will bless you
- I will make you name great
- You will be a blessing
- I will bless those who bless you
- I will curse those who curse you
- In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed
All these promises to Abraham directly apply to the Christian today.
The blessing was not only for Abraham because it also says all peoples on earth will be blessed through you (through Abraham). This should make you and me sit up and take note.
Genesis 22:17 (AMP) . . .indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed like the stars of the heavens and like the sand on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies [by conquering them].
The Lord does not just bless – He multiplies!
1 Chronicles 16:15-17 (AMP) Be mindful of His covenant forever, The promise which He commanded and established to a thousand generations, The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath (sworn promise) to Isaac. He confirmed it as a statute to Jacob, And to Israel as an everlasting covenant.
God stands by His word and His promises – even through the generations – even to a thousand generations! Abraham was successful and blessed all of his days because he believed the promises of God.
Romans 4:20-21 (AMP) But he did not doubt or waver in unbelief concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and empowered by faith, giving glory to God, being fully convinced that God had the power to do what He had promised.
Romans 4:16 (AMP) Therefore, [inheriting] the promise depends entirely on faith [that is, confident trust in the unseen God], in order that it may be given as an act of grace [His unmerited favor and mercy], so that the promise will be [legally] guaranteed to all the descendants [of Abraham]—not only for those [Jewish believers] who keep the Law, but also for those [Gentile believers] who share the faith of Abraham, who is the [spiritual] father of us all—
God gives these sevenfold blessings first to Abraham, we also see these sevenfold blessings given to Israel through Moses. God is just confirming His word.
Exodus 6:6-8 (NKJV) Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD.’”
Abraham’s promises are yours! Believe God’s word to you, and walk in His blessings!
