Job 16 summarises Job’s response to his friends’ criticism, expressing that their words bring no comfort but deepen his sorrow. He feels misunderstood and unjustly attacked, pleading for God’s understanding and justice.*There must be someone who knows the truth about me, in the highest.* Job 16:19-20 (MSG) “There must be someone in heaven who knows the truth about me, in highest heaven, some Attorney who can clear my name – 20 My Champion, my Friend, while I’m weeping my eyes out before God.”This passage foreshadows Jesus, our ultimate Advocate. Job, in his distress, yearns for someone to stand before God on his behalf—an attorney who truly understands him. An attorney or advocate supports, counsels, and pleads our case, especially when we are powerless to do so.1 John 2:1 (ESV) “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”Jesus fulfils this role as our Advocate, stepping in as a heavenly “lawyer” on our behalf. In moments of failure or guilt, He is there, appealing for us. Not only does He plead our case, but He does so as the righteous one who fulfils the law perfectly. Imagine having Jesus, more skilled than any earthly lawyer, taking on our case tirelessly. Even more powerful, He is the Son of the Judge—advocating that we be judged with mercy because He has already paid the penalty.*When we falter*When we falter, our verdict is still “not guilty” because Jesus advocates for us. The angels enforce His verdict, and because of His perfect defence, we are seen as righteous before God. In Jesus, we have a divine representative who never loses a case, one who views us through grace and forgiveness.Job, longing for a heavenly advocate, finds his ultimate answer in Jesus. As believers, we have this divine Attorney, whose name is Jesus, interceding on our behalf with mercy. When we struggle, He defends us, reminding the Father of the grace He has secured for us. The Judge sees us not through our flaws, but through Jesus’ victory. In conclusion, Jesus is the Advocate Job was seeking. He stands in heaven on our side, ensuring that we are judged not by our failures but by His triumph. With Jesus, we have a perfect Advocate who stands beside us, defending us with unending love and grace.
