17 February 2022 – Jesus the bright morning star

Revelation 22:16 (NASB95) “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

Jesus calls himself, “the bight morning star.” This was to fulfil a prophecy, given all the way back in the Old Testament by the prophet Balaam.

Numbers 24:17 (ESV) “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth.

Jesus did not refer to himself as a “star.” Instead he called himself, “the bright morning star.”

Why did Jesus refer to himself as the bright morning star? The bright morning star represents the promise of a new day, it indicates that something better is coming. Jesus is our new day.

Jesus is the bright morning star because in him there is newness. Every day has the potential of being new. In him, we can always start fresh!

Charles W Fry and William S Hays wrote the Song Lilly of the Valley: “He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul. He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne; In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower; I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn from my heart and now He keeps me by His power. Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore, Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.”

Jesus, our bright morning star, He is the light shining in the darkness that the darkness cannot overcome. The bright morning star, Jesus, brings the promise of a new day, new beginnings.

John 1:5 (NKJV) “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

2 Corinthians 4:6 (NLT) “For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Hebrews 1:3a (ESV) He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

Revelation 21:23 (ESV) “And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.”

Peter 1:16-19 (NIV) “For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. 19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts”

The star is the Lord Jesus. He said I am the bright morning star. He gives hope for the future, today.
