20 January 2021 – God the Ancient of Days

Daniel 7:9 (ESV) 9 “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.”

“Ancient” indicates that God existed before time began. God existed before days were even created in Genesis 1.

God is often represented as ancient, as He that is “from everlasting to everlasting”

Psalm 90:2 (ESV) “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

Isaiah 44:6 (ESV) “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.”

God the Ancient of Days carries the meaning that God has lived through the entire course of human history. He alone is the Ancient of Days, and knows all the deeds of all human beings and of all kingdoms of the earth!

That is why this unique title for God – Ancient of Days – is so important to remember and repeat in our worship. Everything that God created belongs to Him and is controlled by Him. This means space, time, everything! -is under His authority. He rules all, and all follows His sovereign will.

CityAlight also wrote a song, Ancient of Days. “Though the nations rage, kingdoms rise and fall There is still one King reigning overall. So I will not fear for this truth remains That my God is, the Ancient of Days. None above Him, none before Him. All of time is in His hands. For His throne it shall remain and ever stand. All the power, all the glory. I will trust in His name. For my God is, the Ancient of Days. Though the dread of night overwhelms my soul He is here with me, I am not alone. O His love is sure, and He knows my name. For my God is, the Ancient of Days. None above Him, none before Him. All of time in His hands. For His throne it shall remain and ever stand. All the power, all the glory. I will trust in His name. For my God is, the Ancient of Days. Though I may not see what the future brings I will watch and wait for the Saviour King, then my joy complete, standing face to face In the presence of the Ancient of Days.

The title, “Ancient of Days,” reminds us that God is beyond time. He never is worried or caught up in the world’s troubles. He is the perfect, always pure and holy, always objective. He always brings an eternal perspective to everything He does.

You were on God’s mind before you were born.

Ephesians 1:4 (ESV) “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.

The Ancient of Days helps you. Isaiah 40:28–31 (ESV) Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
