A Buckler also refers to “A shield to all who trust in Him,” “A shield to all those who take refuge in Him. Everyone knows what a shield is, and its role as a portion of defensive armour. A shield is large enough to protect the whole body if necessary.
“A buckler differs from a shield. The buckler was a small, manoeuvrable, hand-held shield for deflecting and punching blows. It was usually round and made of metal but occasionally of hardened leather or layers of wood. Bucklers were typically round and frequently between 8 to 16 inches in diameter, but octagonal, square, and trapezoidal versions were also known.” – J. Clements
The physical buckler is too small to ward off the arrows of the enemy. It needs to be used with a sword. The shield is used for defensive purposes (a safeguard), and the buckler is used for offensive purposes (advancement).
God is your shield and your protection. Not only is God your protection, but it is also your buckler. The buckler is used for the purpose of advancement. God advances you through life. God pushes you forward in the battle of life. God will advance you forward against anything that may be coming your way. God not only defends you and advances you! He is your shield and buckler!
Psalm 18:2-3 (NKJV) “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.”
David frequently claimed God as his buckler. After the Lord delivered him from the hand of Saul, David wrote a beautiful song of deliverance in 2 Samuel 22:31 (KJV): “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.”
God is a buckler to all them that trust in him. You’ll be better prepared for life’s battles when you trust God as you can claim Him and His Word as your source of protection and your shield.
In Psalm 91, David creates a picture of God protecting His children much like a bird protects its young, and he refers to God’s truth as his shield and buckler
Psalm 91:4 (NKJV) “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
Proverbs 2:7 (NLV) “He stores up perfect wisdom for those who are right with Him. He is a safe-covering to those who are right in their walk.
Psalm 35:2 (NASB) “Take hold of buckler and shield and rise up for my help.”
Psalm 27:3 (NASB) “Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident.”
Remember, God not only defends you and advances you! He is your shield and buckler!
