22 July 2023 – Live a life of accountability

Hebrews 4:13-16(NLT) Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

We are all accountable to God, and since nothing is hidden from Him, we must give an accurate account. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, accountability is “being responsible for what you do and able to give a satisfactory reason for it, or the degree to which this happens.”

Romans 14:12(AMP) So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Why is accountability necessary?

2 Corinthians 5:10(AMP) For we [believers will be called to account and] must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be repaid for what has been done in the body, whether good or bad [that is, each will be held responsible for his actions, purposes, goals, motives—the use or misuse of his time, opportunities and abilities].

How to hold yourself accountable:

  • Fear God, Ecclesiastes 12:13(NLT) That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.
-* Be accountable to others*, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12(NLT) Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. Proverbs 27:17 (NLT) As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
  • Be Honest, Psalm 32:2-5 (NLT) Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.

“Only the truly faithful friend cares enough about you or me to undertake the often thankless task of pointing out where we are wrong. None of us enjoys being confronted with our faults or sins or mistakes, so we often make it difficult for our friends to do so. As a result, most of us are more concerned about speaking agreeableness to each other than about speaking the truth. This is not loyalty. Loyalty speaks the truth in faithfulness, but it also speaks it in love. Loyalty says, ‘I care enough about you that I will not allow you to continue unchecked in your wrong action or sinful attitude that will ultimately be harmful to you.’” – Jerry Bridges

I conclude with Proverbs 27:6(AMP) Faithful are the wounds of a friend [who corrects out of love and concern], But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful [because they serve his hidden agenda].
