22 October LUKE 6

Come, Hear and Act

Luke 6:46-49(AMP) “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not practice what I tell you? Everyone who comes to Me and listens to My words and obeys them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a [far-sighted, practical, and sensible] man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and yet could not shake it, because it had been securely built and founded on the rock. But the one who has [merely] heard and has not practiced [what I say], is like a [foolish] man who built a house on the ground without any foundation, and the torrent burst against it; and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

According to this passage, three things are necessary if we want to be wise disciples: come to Jesus, hear Jesus’s words, and do what Jesus says.

Thus, we need to dig, go deep, and build on solid rock, meaning that we need to come, hear, and put Jesus’s words into practice.

If we want a strong, unshakeable house we need to continually do all three things that Jesus spoke of: come, hear, and do.

Coming to Jesus without hearing is not enough. Hearing His words without doing them is not enough; doing without coming and hearing is not good advice. Yet, it may just be that the actions of putting Jesus’s words into practice, are the very things that give our ‘house’ – our lives in Christ – its firm foundation.

  • Come: Isaiah 55:1-3(NLT) “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink – even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk – it’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.
  • Hear: Psalm 85:8(ESV) Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.

Mark 4:24(ESV) And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.

John 16:13(ESV) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

  • Do: James 1:22-25(MSG) Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!- even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

Today, let’s build our house on solid ground, by coming to the Lord, hearing Him, and acting upon it.
