23 March 2023 – God hates a lying tongue

A lying tongue is a reminder that all our words count. All words have consequences, and all our words will be judged by God.

This is why in Proverbs 18:21 we are warned: (NKJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 12:22 (AMP) Lying lips are extremely disgusting to the LORD, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.

Exodus 20:16 (AMP) “You shall not testify falsely [that is, lie, withhold, or manipulate the truth] against your neighbor (any person).

Hosea 4:1-2 (AMP) Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel, For the LORD has a [legal] case with the inhabitants of the land, Because there is no faithfulness [no steadfast love, no dependability] or loyalty or kindness Or knowledge of God [from personal experience with Him] in the land. There is [false] swearing of oaths, deception (broken faith), murder, stealing, and adultery; They employ violence, so that one [act of] bloodshed follows closely on another.

The Pulpit Commentary says: “Lying is hateful to God, because he is the God of truth…Lying is the wilful perversion of truth, not only by speech but by any means whatever whereby a false impression is conveyed to the mind.”

James 3:3-12 (MSG) A bit in the mouth of a horse controls the whole horse. A small rudder on a huge ship in the hands of a skilled captain sets a course in the face of the strongest winds. A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it! It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell. This is scary: You can tame a tiger, but you can’t tame a tongue—it’s never been done. The tongue runs wild, a wanton killer. With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image. Curses and blessings out of the same mouth! My friends, this can’t go on. A spring doesn’t gush fresh water one day and brackish the next, does it? Apple trees don’t bear strawberries, do they? Raspberry bushes don’t bear apples, do they? You’re not going to dip into a polluted mud hole and get a cup of clear, cool water, are you?

Speak the truth. Proverbs 12:19 (NKJV) The truthful lip shall be established forever, But a lying tongue is but for a moment.

Job 33:3 (NKJV) My words come from my upright heart; My lips utter pure knowledge.

I conclude with John 8:32 (NKJV) “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
