23 May 2023 – How to remain focused

Proverbs 5:1-2 (Voice) My son, stay focused; listen to the wisdom I have gained; give attention to what I have learned about life So you may be able to make sensible judgments and speak with knowledge.

The Bible is clear that we need to stay focused. In Matthew 14, Peter is a good example of the impact focus has on our lives.

  1. Stay focused on a clear goal. Matthew 14:28 (NLT) Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” Peter had a clear goal; he wanted to walk on water.
  2. Peter stayed focused, irrespective of what others said. Matthew 14:26 (NLT) When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

They saw a ghost. Peter stayed focused and he recognised Jesus. In verse 28, quoted above, Peter asked Jesus to call him to walk on the water. He did not listen to the rest of the disciples, seeing a ghost. During the storm, he remained focused, heard the voice of Jesus and recognised him.

  1. Focus sets you apart from the rest. Matthew 14:29 (NLT) “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on waterer towards Jesus. Peter removed himself from the fearful people, stepped out of the boat, and walked to the Water-walker. To intensify our focus, we must surround ourselves with focused people.
  2. Focused people don’t focus on the circumstances but focus on the impossible. During the storm, they leave their boats and start walking on water. They always see an opportunity in a crisis. They don’t look at the wind and the storm. The moment you look at the wind and the waves, you will sink. Stay focused. The moment Peter looked at the wind and waters, he sank.

Matthew 14:30 (NLT) But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.

  1. Lastly, follow the One who called you. Matthew 14:31 (NLT) Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?

Focused people remain focused on the One who has called them. Keep your eyes focused on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 (AMP) [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work].

I conclude with: “I think you’ve gotta stay focused if you wanna achieve something.” – Hardwell
