24 February 2024 – Jesus, the mighty Master

Luke 1:49(KJV) For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.

Luke 8:24(NIV) The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.

Most of the time, when Jesus was referred to as Master, those who addressed Him called Him Teacher. In this instance, however, they referred to Jesus, as Master of all, the mighty one. The Master for the storm. Jesus is the mighty one who conquers all. That one Man who has the ultimate authority over everything, even nature. That one Man who could calm the storm, command peace, and have complete and immediate obedience from nature. Like servants looking to their master for protection and provision, they pleaded with the Mighty One who could meet their needs.

John 7:46(NLT) “We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded.

Jesus gave the term master a whole new meaning. Jesus is Master to serve. His lordship over us empowers us to live as children of God. As our true Master, Jesus is the One who gives the deepest meaning to our lives, He died to save us, and He constantly reveals His loving care for us. We understand Jesus as Master in light of the new meaning that Jesus himself gave to the term: Jesus is Master in the sense of servant, empowering us to live in the fullness of freedom and love.

Jeremiah 32:16-19(MSG) And then, having handed over the legal documents to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to God, ‘Dear God, my Master, you created earth and sky by your great power – by merely stretching out your arm! There is nothing you can’t do. You’re loyal in your steadfast love to thousands upon thousands – but you also make children live with the fallout from their parents’ sins. Great and powerful God, named God-of-the-Angel-Armies, determined in purpose and relentless in following through, you see everything that men and women do and respond appropriately to the way they live, to the things they do.

Galatians 6:18(MSG) May what our Master Jesus Christ gives freely be deeply and personally yours, my friends. Oh, yes!

John 13:13-15(AMP) You call Me the Teacher (Master) and the Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is what I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher (Master), have washed your feet, you ought [it is your duty, you are under obligation, you owe it] to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you this as an example, so that you should do [in your turn] what I have done to you.

In this verse, our MASTER (Jesus) is instructing us to walk humbly before God, and with one another.
