25 April Song of Solomon 8

In Song of Solomon 8, the bride expresses her deep love and longing for her beloved, emphasising the power of love that is unyielding and enduring. She desires their love to be recognised and celebrated, illustrating the beauty of commitment and intimacy in romantic relationships.

The Fire of Love Stops at Nothing

Song of Solomon 8:6-7 (MSG): “Hang my locket around your neck, wear my ring on your finger. Love is invincible facing danger and death. Passion laughs at the terrors of hell. The fire of love stops at nothing—it sweeps everything before it. Flood waters can’t drown love, torrents of rain can’t put it out. Love can’t be bought, love can’t be sold—it’s not to be found in the marketplace.”

Song of Solomon 8:6-7 (AMP): “Put me like a seal on your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, jealousy is as severe and cruel as Scheol (the place of the dead). Its flashes are flashes of fire, a most vehement flame, the very flame of the Lord! Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers drown it. If a man would offer all the riches of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned and despised.” Love is a powerful force, likened to a bright, divine fire. Just as floodwaters cannot extinguish it, true love endures through trials and challenges. It is worth far more than any material possession. However, love must be nurtured and cared for; without effort, it can weaken and fade.

God Designed Marriage

God designed marriage to transform us into the likeness of Jesus, not merely to bring us happiness. This transformation requires loving our partners unconditionally, even when it is difficult. Christ exemplified this kind of love by sacrificing Himself for the Church, a model for how we should treat our spouses. Ephesians 5:24-29 (NLT): “As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church.”

God’s view of marriage goes beyond a mere contract or set of obligations; it reflects a covenant rooted in His love. True love does not keep a record of wrongs or conditions, as emphasised in 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NIV): “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” God sees marriage as an unbreakable promise designed to shine His light in a dark world, revealing His love to those who do not yet know Him.

Let us embrace the truth that the fire of love stops at nothing. Love God and love your spouse wholeheartedly, reflecting the divine love that brings life and hope to all.
