25 August 2023 – Don’t play games with God

Matthew 26:20-25(MSG) “After sunset, he and the Twelve were sitting around the table. During the meal, he said, “I have something hard but important to say to you: One of you is going to hand me over to the conspirators.” They were stunned, and then began to ask, one after another, “It isn’t me, is it, Master?” Jesus answered, “The one who hands me over is someone I eat with daily, one who passes me food at the table. In one sense the Son of Man is entering into a way of treachery well-marked by the Scriptures—no surprises here. In another sense that man who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man—better never to have been born than do this!” Then Judas, already turned traitor, said, “It isn’t me, is it, Rabbi?” Jesus said, “Don’t play games with me, Judas.”

Our relationship with God ought to be authentic, honest and pure. Honouring God is something we should all seek to do. Do not play with God but offer true worship. In this passage, we see Jesus talking about Judas, who will betray him. Jesus already knows that. Confronting his disciples that one of them will betray him, strangely, Judas answered Jesus, ‘It is not me’. Jesus immediately answers him, ‘Don’t play games with me’.

We cannot play games with God, for He knows our hearts.

Luke 16:15(ESV) And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

1 Samuel 16:7(ESV) But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

Jeremiah 17:9-10(ESV) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

The word translated as the heart is the Hebrew word lêb, (pronounced labe). Lêb is also used figuratively to represent feelings, will, and even one’s intellect. The lêb, or heart is considered to be the centre of everything.

The word translated as deceitful is the Hebrew word âqôb, (pronounced aw-kobe). It could also have been translated to mean fraudulent, crooked, or polluted.

God knows the desires of your heart. Not only that; God knows our hearts better than we do. God sees what is done in secret. His eyes range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

2 Chronicles 16:9(ESV) For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.

Since God knows our hearts, we should always live to please Him alone and not worry about impressing people.

I conclude with Psalm 51:10(AMP) Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right and steadfast spirit within me.
