26 May 2021 – Our Counsellor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby

The Amplified Bible uses six names to describe the person of the Holy Spirit in John 14:16 (AMP) “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counsellor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby) that He may remain with you forever”

The Holy Spirit is:

Our Comforter – John 16:7 (KJV)” Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”

Our Counsellor – The term “counsellor” is a translation a favourite expression of John. It designates a function rather than the nature of something. The function is to counsel, assist, advise, or support. This is the primary roll of the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 (RSV) “But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

Our Helper -John 15:26 (NKJV) “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father”

Our Intercessor – Romans 8:26 (NIV) “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Our Advocate – John 15:26 (NIV) “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.”

Our Stengtherner – Ephesians 3:16 (NIV) “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being”

Our Standby – The Holy Spirit is standing by, just waiting for an opening in our life, waiting for us to ask for His comfort, counsel, guidance, and help. You can rely on Him during an emergency no matter the magnitude of the emergency. Remember He is here to strengthen us. To imagine that the Holy Spirit who lives in you is on standby to offer help, to think that he never takes leave and He never loses focus and that He has your best at heart.

Because we have shut out the Holy Spirit in so many ways, we are stumbling along as though we are spiritually blindfolded. – Aiden Wilson Tozer
