A new year offers new opportunities. While many of us make resolutions for the new year – and there’s nothing wrong with that – statistics show that most resolutions get abandoned after just a few weeks. They don’t last. But whether we decide to come up with resolutions or goals for ourselves in the coming year, the most important thing is to determine to move into a new year closer to God and with renewed purpose.
Look back. Whether we’ve had good times, trials or tribulations, God is faithful. And if we spend some time looking back on the past year of our life, we will see that God was there with us, working in our lives. While it’s never a good idea to get stuck in our past, it’s a good idea to look back on God’s incredible grace and what He has done for us.
The new year is a time to reflect and think about what the past year has brought and what the new year could bring. It is a time to stop and analyse, to take stock of our priorities, values, pursuits, and goals. We need to ask questions like – Who am I? What am I doing with my life? What should I be doing, as a Christian, with my life and the stewardship God has given me? After all, according to the Word of God, all of life is a stewardship, a stewardship of our time, talents, treasures, and God’s truth.
Psalm 77:11(NLT) But then I recall all you have done, O LORD; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
Focus on God’s plan for the new year. It is important to plan. Even if we are making plans for the coming year, don’t forget to let God guide you. Seek God about your future and then, remember to submit to the plans He has for your life as He guides you.
Proverbs 13:16(NLT) Wise people think before they act; fools don’t – and even brag about their foolishness.
A new year, new opportunities. Ephesians 5:15-17(NIV) Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
We need to make the most of every opportunity. In this new year there are 31,536,000 seconds, or 525,600 minutes, or 8,760 hours, or 365 days. For each person, these millions of seconds represent opportunities filled with hopes and dreams.
Ephesians 5:14(MSG) Wake up from your sleep, Climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!
“Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them.” – Ann Landers
“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.” – Richard Branson
I conclude with the words of Victor Kiam: “Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage.”
