29 December 2022 – Make the most of each opportunity

Ephesians 5:14 (MSG) Wake up from your sleep, Climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!

The scripture says that you and I are to make the most of every chance we get. So, here’s the question, how do we make the most of every chance we get?

Isaiah 43:19 (NLT) For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

For as long as you just stay where you are, God can’t do something new. “A ship in a harbour is safe, but that’s not what a ship is built for.” – Anonymous

Decide today that you want to take hold of each opportunity.

Job 22:28 (AMP) You will also decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; and the light [of God’s favour] shall shine upon your ways.

Ephesians 5:15-20 (NLT) So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

How can we take hold of every opportunity?

First, we are to be filled with the Spirit. The literal sense of this phrase is to ‘keep on being filled with the Spirit.’

Then, we are instructed to worship the Lord through music and songs from our lips. The praise of God should flow from us to God and each other. When we do this, light pours into our lives and those around us.

Lastly, giving thanks to God for everything ensures that we will not miss any opportunity to bring the light of God into the world around us.

I conclude with: “To realize the value of one year, ask a student who failed a grade. To realize the value of one month, ask the mother of a premature baby. To realize the value of one week, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of one day, ask a daily wage labourer with kids to feed. To realize the value of one hour, ask two people in love waiting to meet. To realize the value of one minute, ask a person who missed the train. To realize the value of one second, ask the person who just avoided an accident. To realize the value of one millisecond, ask the person who won a silver Olympic medal” – Alistair Begg
