3 June 2022 – The Lord is my rock

2 Samuel 22:2-3 (NLT) “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my saviour; 3 my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my saviour, the one who saves me from violence.”

The Lord is my Rock – Exodus 33:22(ESV) and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.”

Moses was literally between a rock and a hard place in the wilderness. God hid him in the “cleft of the rock” and covered him with His hand for protection. Like God covered Moses with His hand and protection, God will do the same for us today.

The Lord is my fortress Psalm 91:1-2 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

In the Bible time’s cities protected their citizens by building large surrounding walls, which created a fortress that kept them safe. The walls’ constant presence in people’s lives created a safe atmosphere where communities could thrive in safety. Just as a fortress brought peace to a city, God is our fortress and brings peace to our souls during the chaos happening around us.

The Lord is my saviour – Isaiah 12:2 (GNT) “God is my savior; I will trust him and not be afraid. The Lord gives me power and strength; he is my savior.”

Saviour refers to “redeem, ransom, do the part of a kinsman.” A kinsman had the responsibility to help his kin in any difficulty or danger. The Bible has several examples of this. For example, when Abraham’s nephew Lot is taken prisoner, Abraham rescues him. When Lot is threatened by the destruction of Sodom, Abraham makes it his personal responsibility to intercede and protect his kinsman. God is the Kinsman-Redeemer of his people Israel. When Israel is in bondage in Egypt, God redeems them from slavery and puts them in their own land. In the same manner God is our saviour, redeemer, and kinsman, that take responsibility to help us in any difficult situation.

The Lord is my protection and shield Psalm 18:2” The Lord is my protector; he is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe.”

A shield is protection, armour, defence, safeguard, and a buffer. As a verb it means to protect, guard, defend, shelter, screen safeguard. It was protection during a time of war. It could also be used as shade during the heat of day, a shelter to rest under at night. To be under God’s shield is to have God as our protector, to trust that God would look out for us, safeguard us. But even more, to have God as our shield means that we are His, we belong to Him, we fight under His shield and He protects us as His own. It means that God claimed us as his own.

Today, know that God is our rock, fortress, saviour, protection, shield, and the power that saves us
