“I Am the Light of the World”

John 8:12 (NLT) “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Martin Luther wrote of Jesus as the Light: “God considers human reason, wisdom, morality, and even sunlight, for that matter; to be dark and hazy compared to his Word. God’s Word is a flame that shines in the darkness. Through teaching, preaching, and the sacraments, its glow spreads. If we use this light, then God will no longer remain hidden from us.”

John 12:36 (ESV) “While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

John 1:4-5 (NIV) “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Isaiah 9:2 (NLT) The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.”
Isaiah 60:1-3 (NIV) “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. 2 Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you.”

Because the Light, Jesus Christ shines in our lives, we are the light of the World, representing Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Ephesians 5:8 (ESV) “for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light”

Jesus confirms that we are the light of the world. The moment we believe in the Light (Jesus), we become sons and daughters of Light. Like the moon reflects the sun, we reflect the light of Jesus onto the world around us.
