2 Samuel 5:17-22 (NIV) 17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 19 so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.”
Whenever David faced a trial, especially with his enemies, he always asked to know God’s will. Each time he inquired, the Lord graciously gave him a clear and definite answer.
David always inquired of the Lord. David’s multiple inquiries of the Lord reveal that he was a man of prayer, who was always intent to know His will. This was the main reason why he was called a man after God’s own heart.
Acts 13:22 (ERV) “After God took Saul away, God made David their king. This is what God said about David: ‘David, the son of Jesse, is the kind of person who does what pleases me. He will do everything I want him to do.”
We please God when we ask Him.
Judges 18:5-6 “They said to him, “Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether our way on which we are going will be prosperous.” The priest said to them, “Go in peace; your way in which you are going has the Lord’s approval.”
God speaks to us daily, but it seems that we are not listening
Matthew 13:14 (MSG) “I don’t want Isaiah’s forecast repeated all over again: Your ears are open but you don’t hear a thing. Your eyes are awake but you don’t see a thing. 15 The people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won’t have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won’t have to look, so they won’t have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them. 16 But you have God-blessed eyes – eyes that see! And God-blessed ears – ears that hear! 17 A lot of people, prophets and humble believers among them, would have given anything to see what you are seeing, to hear what you are hearing, but never had the chance.”
John 16:13 (NASB) “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”
David was instructed to attack the Philistines, and he did. David was obedient to the instruction of the Lord and won the battle.
When you pray and obey, you will be victorious.
