4 July 2022 – The importance of right thinking is emphasised throughout the Bible

Proverbs 23:7(NKJV) “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it springs the issues of life.”

We are warned that the things we fear tend to become reality. Job 3:25 (NKJV) “For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, And what I dreaded has happened to me.”

Job was going through a horrible season of testing. He had lost his children‚ livestock‚ most of his servants‚ and now his body was wasting away with a plague of painful boils from head to toe. The things Job feared came upon him.

God says in his word‚ he has not given us a spirit of fear‚ but of power‚ love‚ and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Fear is a negative spirit to make us afraid. It is False Evidence Appearing Real. James sums it up when he writes that one who doubts is “a double-minded man unstable in all his ways”

James 1:6-9 (NKJV) “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

James writes of the doubting person that he is “like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does”. A doubter is a double-minded person.

When we doubt, we must not think that we will receive anything from the Lord. A double-minded person is someone who doubts God and His promises. He may ask God for help, but he is unsure if God will come through for him or not. He does not realise that his own doubts about God hinder the fulfilment of his prayers. “That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord!”

Psalm 32:10b (NIV) “but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.”
1 Kings 18:21 “Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.”

Proverbs 3:5 (NIV) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”
