The Yosemite Firefall was an event that took place in the summertime, it began in 1872 and continued for almost a hundred years until 1968. For the event, burning hot coals were dribbled from the top of a mountain in the Yosemite National Park to the valley 900 m below. From a distance, it looked like a glowing waterfall. The owners of the nearby hotel organised the firefall event. It is believed that David Curry, founder of Camp Curry in the Yosemite National Park, would stand in the valley at the base of the fall, and each night yell ‘Let the fire fall’ signalling all is ready to start pushing the coals over. In January 1968, the director of the National Park Service, ordered a stop of the event. The reason being it was not a natural event and the overwhelming number of visitors it attracted trampled the meadows.
This can be said of so many believers too. There no longer is that burning fire of God in their lives, no more fire in worship and joy or the fire of the Holy Spirit. It is now only a flickering of a once red-hot fire. Gone is the fire; gone is the working of the gift of the Holy Spirit, replaced with covert and treating God like a fast-food outlet just going to God when in trouble or in need of what only He can do. Gone is the excitement, the preaching about the cross, sin and salvation because these could offend people.
We need the fire of God!
Matthew 25:7-8 (AMP) Then all those virgins got up and put their own lamps in order [trimmed the wicks and added oil and lit them]. But the foolish virgins said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps (fire) are going out.’
Flames that were once ignited by the power of the Holy Ghost today no longer burn bright. The Spirit and soul do not shine in a dark world.
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
We need the fire of God. We need fire to fall in our midst. We need the fire of God to fall on us again.
