6 February 2023 – Miracles

Joel 2:26 (NLT) Once again you will have all the food you want, and you will praise the LORD your God, who does these miracles for you. Never again will my people be disgraced.

Psalms 136:4-9 (MSG) Thank the miracle-working God, His love never quits. The God whose skill formed the cosmos, His love never quits. The God who laid out earth on ocean foundations, His love never quits. The God who filled the skies with light, His love never quits. The sun to watch over the day, His love never quits. Moon and stars as guardians of the night, His love never quits.

God is a God of miracles, Psalm 77:14 (ESV) You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.

The Bible uses three main words to refer to a miracle: sign, wonder, and power.

A miracle is an act of God beyond human understanding that displays God’s power, inspires wonder in humans, and acts as a sign that God is at work in the world. The God of miracles uses supernatural power to reveal Himself to people on earth.

The word sign is used to refer to a distinguishing mark or indication. This term may also refer to something unusual and different from nature. When Jesus changed water to wine, it was the first of His miraculous signs. The word sign is used in the Old Testament to denote something that can be visibly seen to demonstrate God’s power or care. David pleads in Psalm 86:17 (NKJV) Show me a sign for good, That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, Because You, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

A wonder is an awe-inspiring or terrifying act that manifests supernatural power. The word wonder in the Old Testament refers to a special display of God’s power or token of the future event.

God is always the force behind a wonder, and God does wonders as part of His rule and reign. 1 Chronicles 16:12 (NKJV) Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,

Biblical words that are translated as miracles often have to do with God’s power and strength.

Exodus 15:6 (NLT) “Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O LORD, smashes the enemy.

Psalm 46:1 (NLT) God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

Power and strength carry a unique emphasis in the Old Testament. They refer to a personal God who uses His power to care for His people.

This sense of power is carried over into the New Testament using dunamis which is a Greek word meaning the outward expression of power, deed of power, miracle, wonder.

Hebrews 2:4 (NLT) And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.

Another Greek word for power is exousia. This word is never translated as miracle, but is used to describe the distinct power of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and how that power is given to God’s people.

I conclude with Exodus 34:10 (NLT) The LORD replied, “Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD—the awesome power I will display for you.”
