7 February 2021 – God my Deliver

Deliverance often indicated the power of one entity overcoming the power of another. God’s deliverance is always an act of love and mercy, motivated and propelled by covenant faithfulness.

2 Samuel 22:2 (NASB) “He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;”

Psalm 32:7 (ESV) “You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.”

God, delivered Daniel from the clutches of ferocious lions, David from countless pursuers, Israel from the entire nation of Egypt.

2 Samuel 22:2–4 (ESV) “He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my saviour; you save me from violence. 4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised”

Psalm 107:6 (NLT) “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress.”

Psalm 124:7 (NLT) “We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free!”

The word deliverance in Psalm 124 means “to slip away, to escape, deliver from danger.”
God will supply the power to defeat the enemy once the believer faces the enemy in faith. David gives us an example of God’s faithfulness to the one who will face the enemy:

I Sam 17:45-46a (NASV) “But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a saber, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will hand you over to me”

The picture of God as deliverer is parallel with the images of a rock, fortress, helper, and a strong tower.

Psalm 40:17 (NASB) “But I am afflicted and needy; May the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my saviour; Do not delay, my God.

Psalm 144:2 (NASB) “My faithfulness and my fortress, My stronghold and my saviour, My shield and He in whom I take refuge, Who subdues my people under me.”

According to Job God delivers us from famine, war, the scourge of the tongue, the wild animals, to safety, abundant offspring, and long life.

Job 5:19-26 (AMP) “He will rescue you from six troubles; Even in seven, evil will not touch you. 20 “In famine He will redeem you from death, And in war from the power of the sword. 21 “You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, And you will not be afraid of destruction when it comes. 22 “You will laugh at violence and famine, And you will not be afraid of the wild beasts of the earth. 23 “For you will be in harmony with the stones of the field, And the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. 24 “You will know also that your tent is secure and at peace, And you will visit your dwelling and fear no loss [nor find anything amiss]. 25 “You will know also that your descendants will be many, And your offspring as the grass of the earth. 26 “You will come to your grave in old age, Like the stacking of grain [on the threshing floor] in its season.”
