Isaiah 11:2 (NLT) “And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”
Matthew 13:19 (NLT) “The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts.”
When you hear the Word of the Kingdom and neglect to understand it, you’re giving room to the devil to steal it from your heart. This is why you ought to have the Spirit of understanding at work in your life. He’s the One Who helps you understand the Word of God that comes to you.
Understanding comes by revelation
Ephesians 3:1-4 (AMP) “For this reason [because I preach that you and believing Jews are joint heirs] I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was entrusted to me [to share with you] for your benefit; 3 and that by [divine] revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I have already written in brief. 4 By referring to this, when you read it you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ”
Paul explains here that God made the mystery of Christ known to him by revelation. The word “known” means “to give to understand.” In essence, Paul was saying that God, by revelation, gave him understanding of the mystery of Christ. The Spirit of Understanding is God’s supernatural revelation-His secret insights to His Word. Understanding simply means a “putting together” or a comprehending or a grasping of His Word. The Spirit of God illuminates our hearts and gives us understanding of His Wisdom.
Proverbs 24:3-4 (ESV) “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; 4 by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”
1 Corinthians 2:14 (NASB) “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.”
“Spiritual man”—a person whose mind and heart are renewed by the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:12 (NASB) “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God”
