“I AM the Alpha and Omega”
Revelation 22:12–13 (NIV) “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
Alpha and Omega are the first and the last letters in the Greek Alphabet. Jesus clarifies what He means by saying ‘I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. In English He is saying I am the A and the Z, and everything in between. But God isn’t speaking about alphabets. He is speaking of reality. God is absolutely the beginning and absolutely the end. Everything that is originates ultimately in him. And everything will somehow end with him.
Colossians 1:16 (MSG) “For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels – everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.”
Isaiah 44:6 (NIV) “This is what the Lord says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.
Everything comes from God and nothing will outlast God, therefore God has no competitors. Besides Him there is no god!
Revelation 1:8 (NIV)“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.
Alpha – God is the FIRST—the BEGINNING. Before him there was nothing. There was no “before him.”
Psalm 90:2 (ESV) “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Omega – The End
Revelation 21:6 (ESV) “And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.”
To the thirsty I will give water without price from the fountain of the water of life. For the thirsty he is the end in the sense that he will be the source of their life forever. God is a fountain of life at the beginning, and he is a fountain of life at the end—forever.
Revelation 22:17 (ESV) “The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
God is a never-ending omega for every person. We need to remind ourselves again and again that our lives will end in God.
