9 August Psalm 101

Be the salt of the earth

Psalm 101:6(MSG) But I have my eye on salt-of-the-earth people—they’re the ones I want working with me.

Matthew 5:13(NLT) You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

As salt affects the flavour of food, we should similarly influence the world by how we live and act toward one another. Those who are ‘the salt of the earth’ stand against injustice and corruption. These are the type of people that David referred to when he says: I have my eye on salt-of-the-earth people.

Leviticus 2:13(NLT) Season all your grain offerings with salt to remind you of God’s eternal covenant. Never forget to add salt to your grain offerings.

Salt was a crucial part of the offering, symbolising purity, preservation, and value. Every sacrifice offered to God should be pure, should be enduring, and should have a cost. In ancient times, salt was a necessity of life, used by many cultures for seasoning, preservation, disinfection, ceremonial offerings, and even as a unit of exchange.

When God required salt to be a part of their grain offering, it showed the relationship God wanted with his people and how God wanted his people to be the preservative of the earth.

Salt is aseptic, meaning it is free from contamination and harmful bacteria. Salt prevents infection. According to ancient and biblical customs, eating salt formed a bond of friendship. It was said that once you had eaten a man’s salt, you were their friend for life. God wanted every sacrifice to be a reminder of this desired relationship with us.

We are salt and light. Our presence should uplift and enhance, bringing out the beauty in people’s lives. We should not harm others by being destructive but instead help others live their best lives possible, so they can joyfully appreciate all that God has created us for.

Today, decide to be the salt of the earth.
