Practicing the Presence of God – Praising God

Body, Soul and Spirit

Thessalonians 5:23 “And the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Waiting on the Lord starts in the Body

Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

1 Corinthians 9:27 (LB) Like an athlete I punish my body, treating it roughly, training it to do what it should, not what it wants to.

  • Asking is the Flesh
  • Seeking is the Soul
  • Knocking is the Spirit.

The Soul Realm.

Soul Realm –  Seek

Psalm 103 :2 (NKJV) “Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things,

So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

3 Things are associated with Worship

  1. By thanksgiving we acknowledge God’s goodness – We thank God for what he does.
  2. By praise we acknowledge God’s greatness – We praise God for his great acts.
  3. By worship we acknowledge God’s holiness – We worship God for his holiness.

Thanksgiving, Praise and Worship

Psalm 95 (AMPCE) 1 O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!  3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.  Psalm 95 (AMPCE) 4 In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights and strength of the hills are His also. 5 The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land.  6 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker [in reverent praise and supplication].

Thanksgiving

  • Thanksgiving always has to do with showing gratitude for something that God has done for you. This can be something that is naturally done already, or something that you are believing God for by faith.
  • You thank God for sending His Son to die for you, for healing you, for delivering you, for meeting your needs, etc.

Psalm 100:5 Three unchanging reasons for thanking God

a. The Lord is good

b. His mercy is everlasting

c. His truth endures to all generations

Praise

  • Praise – Praise means to give honor.
  • To glorify God especially by the attribution of perfections.
  • The Hebrew word for “praise” is “yadah” (pronounced ya-da), meaning to throw, shoot, cast.
  • This has to do with throwing forth honour on God, because His characteristics, attributes and the summation of who He is, is commendable (worthy of praise).

Opposite of praise

  • abuse
  • blame
  • condemnation
  • criticize
  • disapproval

Opposite of praise, blaming God

Proverbs 19:3 People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the LORD.

Romans 9:20 Who do you think you are to talk back to God like that? Can an object that was made say to its maker, “Why did you make me like this?”

Opposite of praise –  Complaining

Numbers 11:1 Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the Lord; and when the Lord heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.

Praise

It is splendor, brightness. It speaks of magnificence, excellence, dignity, and grace.

It also speaks of majesty (the Kingly majesty, which belongs to God as supreme ruler; and majesty in the sense of the absolute perfection of God).

It is a most glorious condition, or most exalted state.

You praise God because He is a healer (Jehovah Rapha), because He is a deliverer, because He is eternal, because it is His nature to love His children.

Praise –  Attributes of God

  1. God is trustworthy
  2. God is love
  3. God is righteous
  4. God is holy
  5. God is merciful
  6. He Is Always Everywhere
  7. He Is Full of Perfect, Unchanging Wisdom
  8. God Is Good
  9. Everlasting God
  10. Almighty God

Facts about praise

  1. Our praise offers God a throne

Psalm 22:3 (AMPCE) But You are holy, O You Who dwell in [the holy place where] the praises of Israel [are offered].

2. Praise is purpose for which God blesses us and brings victory

Joshua 6:16 & 20 – And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the Lord hath given you the city.

So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

3. Our tongue is our glory which gives praise to God.

Psalm 30:11-12 (NKJV) 11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off [a]my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, 12 To the end that my [b]glory may sing praise to You and not be silent.

O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

4. Praise is a beautiful garment of our Praise

Isaiah 61:3 (NLT)  To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning,  festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.

5 Praise is a sacrifice.

Jeremiah 33:11 (NKJV) the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who will say: “Praise the Lord of hosts, For the Lord is good, For His mercy endures forever”— and of those who will bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause the captives of the land to return as at the first,’ says the Lord.

6. Spiritual weapon to silence and bind Satan

Psalm 8:2 (NIV) Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

7. Praise prepares the way for God’s supernatural intervention

2 Chronicles 20:21-23 (MSG)  21 After talking it over with the people, Jehoshaphat appointed a choir for God; dressed in holy robes, they were to march ahead of the troops, singing, Give thanks to God, His love never quits. 22-23 As soon as they started shouting and praising, God set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir as they were attacking Judah, and they all ended up dead. The Ammonites and Moabites mistakenly attacked those from Mount Seir and massacred them. Then, further confused, they went at each other, and all ended up killed.

Acts 16:25-26 (AMP) But about midnight, as Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the [other] prisoners were listening to them,26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the very foundations of the prison were shaken; and at once all the doors were opened and everyone’s shackles were unfastened.

When to praise God

  1. Every day—forever and ever day

Psalm 145:2 (AMPCE) 2 Every day [with its new reasons] will I bless You [affectionately and gratefully praise You]; yes, I will praise Your name forever and ever.

  • At all times—continually

Psalm 34:1( AMPCE) I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
