Praise and Worship – What is praise?

Commending

To entrust ourselves to God’s care and recommend that others do the same.

Psalm 7:1 (NKJV) “O Lord my God, in You I put my trust; Save me from all those who persecute me; And deliver me,”

Psalm 9:10 (NKJV) “And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”

Psalm 16:1  (NKJV)”Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.”

Praise by commendation applies the promises of God in our personal circumstances.

2 Corinthians 1:20 (AMP) “For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” to the glory of God.”

Galatians 3:29 (LB) “And now that we are Christ’s we are the true descendants of Abraham, and all of God’s promises to him belong to us.”

To express a favourable opinion of someone

Psalm 59:16 (NKJV) “But I will sing of Your power; Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; For You have been my defense And refuge in the day of my trouble.

Psalm 63:1-2 (NKJV) O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You. In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. 2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.

Glorifying

To Glorify is to honour, praise, or admiration. To admire someone.

God is Good – Psalm 34:8 (NKJV) “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

God is faithful -Psalm 33:4 (NKJV) “For the word of the Lord is right, And all His work is done in truth.”

God is just – Psalm 11:7 (NKJV) “For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”

God is merciful -Daniel 9:9 (NKJV)  “To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness”

James 1:17 (NKJV) “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Praise is:

Putting God in first place

Why is praise so vital? Because praise puts our focus on God, it puts him in first place.

Often, we put other things first in our lives. When we’re facing a problem, we put that problem first.

Proverbs 3:9-10 (ESV) “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.”

Matthew 10:38-39 (ESV) And anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

Colossians 3:17 (ESV) “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Psalm 27:4  (ESV) “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Praise is an automatic result of our relationship with God

People who praise God on a regular basis do so because they can’t stop thinking of Him and talking of Him.

They have gotten close enough to Him to see His true nature and character, and they have found in Him more than everything they have ever hoped for.

James 4:8 (NET) Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded

Friends of God Continually Worship Him

Worship is a natural response for those who know God intimately. Worship comes from the fact that one recognizes how “worthy” an object or person is

The more we know God, the more we will worship.

Romans 12:1 (NET) “Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice—alive, holy, and pleasing to God—which is your reasonable service.”

Praise is a Conscious Choice

Psalm 34:1-6 (NLT) I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. 2 I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart. 3 Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together. 4 I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. 5 Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. 6 In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.

Exodus 15:2 (NIV) “The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

Praise is an Expression of Faith

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

It’s about “belief, trust, and loyalty.”  Faith “expresses an individual’s feeling of safety.” Our faith says something significant about who we believe God is. Faith is confidence in God’s power and His promises.

Proverbs 8:17 (AMP) “I love those who love me; And those who seek me early and diligently will find me.”
